New vehicle sales statistics for the month of January, 2014 reflected a decline in comparison to sales figures for January 2013

In amplification of the new vehicle sales statistics for the month of January, 2014 – released the  National Association of Automobile Manufacturers SA (NAAMSA) commented that new vehicle sales had started the year on a weak note, in line with general Industry expectations, with all major sectors recording declines compared to the sales levels of the corresponding month last year.  In the event, January 2014 aggregate new vehicle sales at 53 025 units registered a decline of 3 874 vehicles or a fall of 6.8% compared to the 56 899 vehicles sold in January last year.  Most major segments recorded year-on-year declines – new cars 7.0%, light commercials 6.6%, medium commercials zero, heavy trucks 19.5% and extra heavy trucks 6.1%.  Moreover, the January 2014 export sales at 13 960 units reflected a decline of 3 433 vehicles or a fall of 19.7% compared to the 17 393 vehicles exported in January last year.

New vehicle sales statistics for the month of December, 2013 as released by the National Association of Automobile Manufacturers South Africa (NAAMSA)

1. BRIEF COMMENT ON DECEMBER, 2013 SALES

New vehicle sales ended 2013 on a subdued note with aggregate Industry new vehicle sales at 46 501 units recording a small improvement of 95 vehicles or a gain of 0.2% compared to the total new vehicle sales of 46 406 units during the corresponding month of December, 2012. The December, 2013 new passenger car market and light commercial vehicle market both reflected a year on year volume decline of 0.9%. The car rental Industry had accounted for 9.3% of total sales.

Export sales had recorded an improvement during December, 2013 and at 21 613 units reflected a gain of 1 845 vehicles or 9.3% compared to the 19 768 vehicles exported during December, 2013.
