In the world of maskanda players there are few who have reached the heights enjoyed by Phuzekhemisi. His recorded work topped the charts for years in South Africa and his name and fame is legendary. Madala Kunene, creator of the unique Madala Line, a style of guitar playing that draws from a variety of influences is also a well-known musical icon, performing all over Europe on a regular basis. Before appearing as a double act in Carnegie Hall in October (2014), these two top artists performed in the Grand Foyer at Durban’s Playhouse Theatre

As musicians Phillip Henry and Hannah Martin waited for Nibs Van de Spuy to call them up on stage I had the weirdest feeling of déjà vu. For although the scene took place a few days ago  in Durban, South Africa, I had a sense of a different time and setting, carried as a miasma around these two minstrels as surely as if they had been dressed in medieval clothes and standing on a floor strewn with rushes. When they took to the stage, the feeling did not dispel; rather it intensified and for a glorious and timeless while I was lost in another world, transported on the wings of song…..
