A warm cheerful voice answered the phone on Saturday afternoon and assured me that the kitchen was open; there were no set hours for meals and we would be most welcome. The atmosphere in Café Abyssinia in Durban’s suburb of Essenwood, is relaxed and redolent with divine smells of spicy cooking in the little kitchen. Gentle Ethiopian music plays, the rich dark-roast coffee coloured table covers are offset by creamy yellow walls, the gleaming wood of carved wooden chairs and a few carefully selected framed posters. The Lion of Judah watches over the proceedings and the gracious hostess, Charity Worku, with her lilting voice and kind smile makes you feel at home the moment you step in the door.
